They’re Back… Earlier Than Expected

There’s something special about that first sighting each spring.

This year, it caught me off guard—in the best way.

The Burrowing Owl have arrived… and they’re early.

Here in Canada, they carry a special designation as Endangered under Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada. That changes how you see them.

It’s no longer just a seasonal marker.
It’s a reminder of responsibility and a signal to pay attention.

Two burrowing owls perched on a mound surrounded by tall golden grass.

Every year on the ranch has a rhythm we come to trust. The seasons turn, the work begins, and certain moments feel comfortingly the same.

But then… something shifts.

A little earlier. A little different.

And just enough to remind us: no two years are ever the same.

That’s where the lesson lives.

It’s easy to fall into patterns—doing things the way we’ve always done them. The same timing, the same expectations, the same habits. Sometimes that creates efficiency… and sometimes it quietly creates a rut.

But nature doesn’t stay still.

And neither are we meant to.

This early arrival feels like more than a surprise—it feels like an invitation.

To notice sooner.
To adjust earlier.
To ask, what could be even better this year?

Because growth doesn’t come from repeating the season…
It comes from responding to it.

And when a species like this returns—especially one that depends on healthy grasslands—it’s also a quiet reminder of stewardship. The land is speaking. The question is—are we listening?

Out here, sameness gives us stability…
But awareness is what allows us to grow.

So as these owls settle in ahead of schedule, I’m choosing to see it as a nudge.

A nudge to stay curious.
A nudge to adapt sooner.
A nudge to keep getting better—season by season.

What about you, my friend?

Where might life be offering you a small shift… that could lead to something better?
